Searchmaschinenoptimierung
Search engine optimization is about ranking as high as possible in the organic (i.e., non-paid) search results of search engines like Google. This brings more qualified visitors to your site—for free.
How do search engines work?
Search engines constantly crawl the web and evaluate websites based on many different factors. SEO aims to influence these factors as positively as possible.
This may sound quite abstract, but basically the search engines try to act as a reasonable person would:
On-page SEO
On-page SEO encompasses measures that take place directly on your site:
structure
First of all, the content must be well-structured. Imagine reading a magazine without headings, paragraphs, or any other formatting. It would consist of pure text from cover to cover. You would immediately lose interest in reading it, even though all the information was contained within the text.
Just like in a magazine, the content on a website must be structured for search engines. Articles, paragraphs, headings, navigation areas, and footer sections must be clearly defined so that the search engine can categorize everything quickly and correctly. And what's good for the search engine is also good for visitors, who can then easily navigate the site.
Text content
Relevant text content is important! It's not enough to use Chat-GPT to create meaningless content based on a few keywords. Just as Chat-GPT is capable of distilling text down to its core messages, search engines like Google are also capable of doing this.
Keywords
Clients often aim to have their site appear in search engines for specific keywords. However, you should first check the keywords themselves. Are these really the terms that end users use?
Let's assume the customer sells "toilet seats" on their website, but it turns out that a large proportion of visitors are searching for "toilet lids." It certainly makes sense to use the term (in addition). While Google and other search engines understand that both terms mean the same thing, using the term directly on the page significantly increases the chances of being found.
Once you have found the right keywords, they should be reflected in the text content, ideally also in headings, followed by text content that relates to the heading.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO focuses on optimizations that take place under the hood, including:
- Of course, the programming of the site must be error-free.
- The programming should be current and proven (best practice).
- Loading times should be minimized and happen in the correct order.
Off-page SEO
Off-page SEO concerns things that take place outside of your website. These are primarilyBacklinks.
Backlinks
Backlinks are links from other sites to your own website. For Google, this is a clear signal of trust or recommendation. When other sites recommend your site, its relevance increases, and thus its ranking in search results.
Online reputation
Similar to links, these include positive mentions of your site. These could be positive Google reviews, for example, or positive reviews in forums or review platforms.
